FIELD: physics; geophysics.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to geophysical hydrodynamics and can be used in simulating large scale atmospheric currents. In the method of simulating large-scale atmospheric currents, currents are created in a spherical channel, which rotate about the axis of symmetry of the channel. The method is realised using a device which has a spherical channel mounted on a rotating platform. The channel is filled with electrolyte. A system of copper electrodes and magnetic strips is mounted on the inner wall of the channel at certain angles to create the required profile of the magnetic field induction. Electrical current is passed through the electrolyte using the copper electrodes, regulating current density through the electrolyte as desired. Interaction of the current and the magnetic field results in a force which moves the electrolyte. Rotation in the channel results in a Coriolis force, which corresponds to force acting in the real atmosphere, acting on the moving electrolyte. Through selection of angular velocity of rotation of the channel, magnetic field induction and current density in the electrolyte, the invention enables to set values of main dimensionless current parametres corresponding to the real atmosphere.;EFFECT: increased accuracy of simulating large-scale atmospheric currents.;2 cl, 3 dwg
