FIELD: process engineering.;SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical, petrochemical, metallurgical and food industries. Proposed method consists in using, during the 1st stage, of catalyst containing 6.5 to 12.0 wt % of CuO and 23.0 to 29.0 wt % of CeO2 applied on monocline-modification zirconium dioxide that contains modifying additives representing hafnium oxide with content not lower than 1.0 wt %, and/or iron oxide with content not lower than 0.3 wt %, and/or aluminium oxide with content not lower than 0.5, and/or silicon oxide with content not lower than 0.3, and/or whatever mix thereof. At the 2nd stage, noble metal-base catalyst is used. Oxygen or air is fed into reaction zone during only the 1st stage. Aforesaid process is conducted at oxygen-to-carbon dioxide molar ratio varying from 0.5 to 3, at least 0.1 atm and 110° to 130 °C.;EFFECT: reduced process temperature with high CO oxidation selectivity.;4 cl, 1 dwg, 7 ex
