The method involves projecting a fixation mark in a direction of eyes of a patient or subject, where a reflex occurs at cornea of the eyes. The reflex occurring at the cornea is detected during projection of the fixation mark, and is reflected back to the eyes. The reflex is guided and formed such that an image of the fixation mark is developed on retina. The reflex is guided such that another image of the mark concentric to the former image is generated when the eyes are placed near a target optimal position. A mask utilized as the mark is illuminated by a light source i.e. LED. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting a patient or subject to automatically position eyes of the patient or subject optimally in front of an ophthalmic device.
