Cryogenic storage vessel particularly for liquid hydrogen, comprises concentric inner and outer cylindrical chambers (22, 24) separated by vacuum, fluid feed/ discharge and vent lines (162,164) connecting the internal storage chamber (22) with the exterior of the unit and passing through an inclined, blind, vacuum sheath pipe (28) which is surrounded over most of its length by the inner chamber. An independent claim is included for an operating procedure for a vacuum insulated double walled cryogenic storage vessel, for fluid filling or discharge, through lines which pass through a blind, vacuum sheath pipe (28) which extends inside the inner chamber (22).
