The method involves rotatably driving a plate cylinder over a wheel train, where an outer circumference of a cylindrical damping roller (5) cooperates with the plate cylinder and cone-like contact rollers (8, 9) e.g. tandem roller and bridge roller. The damping roller is rotatably driven over the wheel train. The damping roller in a normal operating mode is shifted to a delta-operating mode by a clutch, where the clutch is arranged in the wheel train. A brake torque is imposed on the damping roller in the delta operating mode. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a damping roller of a printing unit of a printing machine.
