The device (1) has a transmitter (6) i.e. laser diode, for generating light waves that are received by a light wave guide (3) and are emitted to an object (2) for reflection. A receiver (7) absorbs the light waves that are transmitted from the light wave guide and reflected from the object. The receiver is formed as a multi-pixel photon counter that is integrated in an opaque housing (8). The light waves transmitted from the light wave guide are emitted directly to the multi-pixel photon counter and are absorbed by the multi-pixel photon counter.
