The method involves configuring a packed device i.e. sensor node (1), over a wireless interface (5) during removal of the packed device from a package i.e. crate. The removal of the packed device from the package is recognized by detecting separation of a mechanical connection between the packed device and the package using a sensor (2). The removal of the packed device from the package is recognized by a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag that is attached to the package, if distance between the packed device and the RFID tag exceeds a certain transmitter coverage range. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for configuring packed devices, comprising a detection mechanism (2) a package for multiple packed devices, comprising a removal detection mechanism (3) a sensor node for a network, comprising a wireless interface.
