The tool has a base body (1) comprising a free end at which an L-shaped carrier body (1.11) for an expansion wedge (2) is arranged. A rotating pressure- and idler roller (5) is arranged at the base body, and an outer covering surface of a seam closure is pressable against an outer surface of the roller during movement of the tool parallel to seam edges. A working chamber is formed by a side piece (1.12) of the carrier body, the wedge, the roller and an interlocking joint of standing seams. Lines of primary force conduction run parallel to the seam edges. An independent claim is also included for a method for opening standing seams of left- or right covering.
