The method involves arranging a reference body (31) in the measuring volume relative to a coordinate axis of a coordinate measuring device (10) which is to be calibrated. A scanning device (26) is arranged at a measuring head of the coordinate measuring device. The scanning device has a button element with which the reference body is scanned. A pre-determined defect value assigned to the measuring points is provided, which describes the condition of the reference body at the respective measuring point.
