The device (1) has two cylinders (3.1,3.2) which are shiftable and detachable. A high pressure stage is provided which consists of a compressor (4.1) and a turbine (4.2) and a low pressure stage is provided which consists of another compressor (5.1) and a turbine (5.2). The compressor of the low pressure stage is arranged upstream to the compressor of the high pressure stage in a fresh-air duct (6). The turbine of the low pressure stage is arranged downstream to the turbine of the high pressure stage in an exhaust gas line (7). An independent claim is included for a method for selective cylinder cutoff in a rechargeable combustion engine.
