The method involves adjusting a reference value of a clutch actuator for an engaging point of friction clutches (16, 18) based on speed characteristics. Time periods are measured until the speed of a multi-step transmission (10) i.e. double clutch transmission, reaches preset values or speed gradients are alternatively evaluated. The reference value of the clutch actuator for the engaging point of the friction clutches is determined as a function of a difference between the time periods or a difference between the speed gradients.
