The method involves actuating a set of friction clutches (16, 18) by a set of clutch actuators (K1-K2). A set of shifting clutches (SK1-SK4) for engaging and releasing a gear stage of a multi-step transmission (10) is actuated by a switching actuator, and a speed gradient is measured. Each friction clutch is released, and another speed gradient is measured. The speed gradients are linked for determining a speed gradient value, where a reference value of the clutch actuators is adjusted for an engaging point of the friction clutch based on the speed gradient values.
