The method involves producing a plasma beam or a flame from a working gas. A precursor material is supplied to the working gas and/or the plasma beam and/or the flame. A reaction product of a precursor is isolated as a marker layer or a functional layer on a substrate (1). A colorant is separately supplied to the working gas or the plasma beam or the flame or together with the precursor. The colorant is dispersed in a fluid e.g. isopropanol, where the method is implemented as a normal pressure plasma method in atmospheric pressure.
