The engine has a crankcase consisting of a cylinder crankcase (10) with a crank drive comprising a crankshaft, and an engine controller comprising a camshaft (12). The camshaft is supported in a camshaft trough (11) that is formed opposite to the cylinder crankcase as a separate assembly. The camshaft trough is separated into a lower camshaft trough part (14) and an upper camshaft trough part (15) in such a manner that the cam shaft is mounted together with bearing brackets in the lower camshaft trough part during lifting of upper camshaft trough part.
