The method involves analyzing optical emission of plasmas (5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b), and measuring intensities of spectral lines, which come from elements that are ablated from a surface of a metal product (2) by the plasmas. A surface composition of the metal product is partially determined, and the laser ablation in a region of an edge (3) of the movable metal product is simultaneously carried out from both sides of the metal product. The optical emission of the plasma is analyzed, where the plasma is produced on each sides of the metal product. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a coating of a moving metal product using a laser-emission spectrometry process.
