The two-stroke engine (2) comprises a carburetor (34) for external fuel-mixture generation. An intake air duct (36) is connected upstream on the air intake side of the carburetor. An insert (48) is arranged in the area of an inlet (46) of the intake air duct. The insert is tapered continuously in flow direction (50) of the air flow sucked in during the engine operation, and then it is expanded suddenly. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a two-stroke engine.
