The method involves providing a transmission signal (122) of a vehicle (112) e.g. car, at a time point to an interface, where the signal exhibits a signal sequence and an identification of the vehicle. An answer signal (124) is received from an object (114) at another time point over the interface. Distance between the vehicle and the object is determined from the time points and a delay time, where the delay time defines a time duration between a reception of the transmission signal and transmission of the answer signal through the object. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for determining a release decision for a supporting device of a vehicle (2) a controller for determining a distance between a vehicle and an object (3) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for determining a distance between a vehicle and an object.
