The method involves determining the collision speed between a vehicle and an object colliding with the vehicle based on the distance between the vehicle and the object, an estimated collision time calculated based on data temporarily provided before the collision, and an actual collision time, where the distance temporarily exists before the collision of the vehicle with the object. The actual collision time corresponds to a deviation of the estimated collision time from the collision, where the deviation is provided as a reading of a counter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller for determining a collision speed between a vehicle and an object colliding with the vehicle (2) a computer program product for determining a collision speed between a vehicle and an object colliding with the vehicle.
