Catalytically active layer for the oxidation of components of the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, comprises a layer of metallic nanoparticles, where the material of the nanoparticle comprises palladium, rhodium, platinum, iron, nickel, chromium, rhenium, ruthenium, technetium, iridium, cobalt, copper, gold and/or silver, where the nanoparticles are bimetallic or polymetallic nanoparticles. Independent claims are included for: (1) a catalyst for the oxidation of components of the exhaust gas of combustion engines, comprising the catalytically active layer; and (2) the treatment of exhaust gas of internal combustion engines by the oxidation of exhaust gas components, comprising conducting the untreated exhaust gas over the catalytic active layer.
