The method involves overlapping an engine angle and a steering angle output by a driver, using an auxiliary force support (20) e.g. hydraulic auxiliary force support. The engine angle is adjusted based on capacity range of the auxiliary force support. A target-engine angle is determined based on a predetermined maximum pinion angular speed. A maximum pinion angle of the auxiliary force support is transmitted to an overlapping unit (14). The auxiliary force support supporting driving of steering wheels is controlled by a control device (24). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a power steering comprising an overlapping unit (2) a computer program with a program code for executing a method for operating a power steering of a motor vehicle.
