The lens (100) has a substrate (122) with a convex front surface and a concave back surface. The convex front surface exhibits a coating (124) and/or the concave back surface exhibits another coating (126). The former coating exhibits an intrinsic compressive pre-load (128) and/or the lateral coating exhibits an intrinsic tensile pre-load (134), where the coatings comprise respective anti-reflection layers. The former coating exhibits a coefficient of expansion that is smaller than the coefficient of expansion of the substrate. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing an eyeglass lens.
