The method involves forming a meshing device (34) as starter relay (4). A start device (1) has a starter motor (2), where a starter pinion (3) is provided for meshing in a gear rim (6) of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle. The meshing device is controlled for meshing the starter pinion by a control system (9), particularly for a start-stop-operation. The starter pinion is held by a holding device in a meshing position. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program product which is loaded in a program memory with program instructions of a microcomputer; and (2) a control system with a microcomputer.
