The device has a positioning unit (9), which positions a wire area (5) in an electromagnetic alternating field such that a wire (6) is heated and a brittle insulator (7) is embrittled. A removing device i.e. compressed air source, removes the insulator from the wire area. The removing device removes brittle insulation of the wire area by gas e.g. air or carbon dioxide, staying under pressure. A cooling device (3) cools an electromagnetic alternating field producing device e.g. inductor (2) and alternating field generator. An independent claim is also included for a method for removing a cover-shaped insulator from a wire.
