The method involves reducing cooling efficiency in a predetermined operating condition by reduction of a coolant flow rate in a coolant channel (2) arranged in a cylinder head (1) or by increasing coolant temperature. The coolant flow rate is reduced by closing a throttle valve and/or reducing a supply rate of a coolant pump. The operating condition is characterized in such a manner that a load-specific measured variable is smaller than a predetermined threshold value and a point of time of fuel injection is delayed to later injection time with respect to a comparable operating condition. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program having a set of instructions to perform a method for operating a self-igniting internal combustion engine (2) a device for controlling an internal combustion engine.
