The method involves connecting LEDs (1a-1d) of a lighting device i.e. headlight, of a motor vehicle in series. Failure of the LEDs is detected by determining voltage drop of the LEDs or by evaluating the voltage drop, where the evaluation takes place by comparing the voltage drop with a temporally variable reference value that corresponds to a control condition of the LEDs. Information about the condition of the LEDs is provided based on the determined voltage drop of the LEDs, where the information is provided by a condition matrix.
