The cancellation method involves detecting steering wheel nibble, calculating the active nibble canceling torque (74) based on the detected steering wheel nibble, and using the electric motor in the electric power steering system (70) as an actuator to apply the canceling torque. The nibble can be detected by creating a tuned resonator filter dependent on vehicle speed, determining a nibble order being a speed dependent nibble frequency, and selecting a damping factor for the detected nibble. An independent claim is also included for a system for actively canceling steering wheel vibrations in an electric power steering system.
