Systems and methods for selecting a solver with appropriate numerical precision are described in each simulation of a series of hierarchically related engineering simulations. According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a series of hierarchically related engineering simulations includes a sequence of finite element analyzes for constructing and analyzing a structural product. An input file describing the structural product and the type of engineering simulation is received. Each different type of engineering simulation is tested to determine which solver is used with the appropriate numerical precision (that is, a single or a double precision). A corresponding executable module (eg, finite element analysis software module) is then used to perform the engineering simulation analysis. The procedure repeats until all engineering simulations are performed throughout the sequence.
