Selected and edit versions of papers presented at ECHO III Conference: Emergence,Complexity, Hierachy, Organization, held at Helsinki and Espoo, August, 3-7, 1998, are published here. The over thirty papers cover a wide scope of topics on the theory and philosophy of emergence and its application to natural sciences like physics, biology and behavioral science like psychology. In addition also the field of communication, social action and cultural study are discussed in various papers. The selection of papers presented is interdisciplinary in its character and spans the gap between natural science and humanities.
