The method involves direct and/or indirect measuring of a pressure pattern starting from an ignition point in a combustion chamber i.e. cylinder, where measuring is repeated over ignition cycles. A distribution e.g. Gauss normal distribution, of a gradient of the pressure pattern starting from the ignition point over the ignition cycles, is calculated. The distribution is compared with a minimum value, and a probability of misfire is determined based on values of the distribution, which are smaller than the minimum value.
