The system has a main brake cylinder (4) with a working chamber connected to wheel brakes (RBa-RBd) of a vehicle by hydraulic lines. Brake pistons (12a-12d) of the wheel brakes are adjusted by low pressure in the hydraulic lines to produce a brake clearance. Primary pistons (3) of the main brake cylinder are adjusted by an electrical drive. A control adjusts the brake clearance depending on driving conditions. The control adjusts the brake clearance without actuating a brake during normal drive. The low pressure is produced by adjusting the pistons of the main brake cylinder. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a brake system (2) a method for using a hydraulic brake system.
