The system (1) has a lamp (2) i.e. high-pressure discharge lamp, a control device provided for controlling the lamp, and a key unit (6) in which lamp-individual data are stored. A ballast unit (4) is temporally controllable by the key unit depending on the lamp-individual data. The key unit is integrated into the lamp or a plug (8) or implemented as a separate component. The data contains initial values such as manufacturing data or data of start-up of the lamp. The key unit activates a lock mode of the lamp. A plug-in point is provided for the key unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lamp.
