The method involves determining a concentration reference value of oxygen concentration in an upstream part of an exhaust gas after-treatment device corresponding to highest temperature. A temperature reference value of exhaust temperature of the exhaust gas after-treatment device is determined corresponding to highest temperature based on a thermal mode of the exhaust gas after-treatment device. The concentration reference value and the temperature reference value are compared with a calibration threshold value under multiple situations to trigger protection mode. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling operation of an exhaust gas after-treatment device of an internal combustion engine.
