The driver assistance system (100) has a detection and control module (101) for detection and identification of a critical driving situation of a vehicle (103). An operation module (102) is provided for autonomous delay of the speed of the vehicle through an initial negative acceleration after meeting a critical driving situation. The operation module or the detection and control module are based on Safety integrity level-3 (SIL3)standard. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for avoiding a collision of a vehicle; (2) a program element for providing instructions to a processor; and (3) a computer-readable medium.
