The method involves arranging an inductive sensor system (22) with multiple coil pairs (C-1 to C-12) over an operating displacement with a primary coil. The primary coil is loaded with an alternating voltage. An inductive secondary coil is coupled with the primary coil. The two determined position characteristic values and a third position characteristic value are displayed on a display unit (28). The third position characteristic value is derived from two position characteristic values. An independent claim is included for a device for determining an actual position of a control rod adjusted by an electrical control rod derive along an operating displacement in a nuclear reactor.
