The unit has a LCD i.e. thin-film-transistor LCD, including a display cell (1), where optical sensors e.g. phototransistors (6), are arranged in a display surface (10) of the cell. A sensor signal is generated by the sensors when opposite regions of the display surfaces masked by an object. A light conductor plate (7) is arranged in front of the cell, where outer surfaces (12, 13) of the plate are totally reflecting surfaces, and light e.g. infrared light or UV light, is conducted via the outer surfaces parallel to the display surfaces. The plate is formed from transparent plastic or glass.
