The method involves predetermining the tolerance time point, tolerance time duration and the tolerance amount of a reducing agent dependent on the actually determined total service performance of a combustion engine. An exhaust gas system of the combustion engine is supplied in frame of a reduction in pollutants, particularly a nitrogen oxide reduction, and upstream of exhaust-gas aftertreatment element, particularly a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst or a selective catalytic reduction catalyst during a regeneration area to define a defined amount of a reducing agent.
