The method involves determining seatbelt load (106) acting on a vehicle occupant based on actual and/or temporal values (102) according to a regulation rule. A control signal (110) is determined based on the seatbelt load, and is provided to control a safety actuator. The control signal is supplied to an interface, and is provided to adjust a load limit of the seatbelt load limiter. Extrapolation of the values is performed according to the regulation rule to determine the seatbelt load.
