The method involves extending filling time of shifting elements that is provided in an automat transmission to a preset value. The preset value is reduced until the occurrence of actuation of shifting elements stops. The maximum filling degree of the shifting elements is recognized by evaluation of number of revolutions signals at a transmission output. The filling of shifting elements is terminated, when maximum filling degree of the shifting element is recognized.
