The method involves driving a running bobbin (11) i.e. cross wound bobbin, on which a thread (30) is wound, by a winding drum (26). The drum is slowed down such that a limit value of slip between the drum and the bobbin is not exceeded. The bobbin is slowed down during interruption of the thread, where the bobbin rests against the drum during a slowing down process. Rotational speeds of the bobbin and the drum are detected during each slowing down process. The bobbin is detached from the drum after falling below the limit value of the rotational speed of the bobbin. An independent claim is also included for a winding apparatus of a running bobbin producing textile machine for executing a method for operating the winding apparatus.
