The method involves detecting a consumption value, which describes energy requirement, of a motor vehicle (10). A difference between the consumption value and a preset standard value is calculated. The difference between the values is displayed on a display (24). Position of the vehicle is detected by a satellite-navigation device (12), and determining a category of the road on which the vehicle is located. The standard value is set based on the category. The consumption value is fuel consumption that is determined over a predetermined time interval. An independent claim is also included for a display device for displaying a consumption parameter in a vehicle.
