The method involves providing a threshold value of engine power in a predetermined consumption-optimized mode during acceleration of a vehicle, where the threshold value is lower than maximum engine power. A transmission (5) of the vehicle is changed in a predetermined economical switching mode by a transmission control unit (4). The consumption-optimized mode is activated by a driver of the vehicle. The threshold value of engine power is adjusted by the driver of the vehicle by a switch (7). The consumption-optimized mode is switched off by complete pressing down of an accelerator pedal (1).
