The method involves detecting an image of a component by a sensor, where the image includes a three-dimensional cloud (10) with detected image points (12). The image is captured by cameras using laser beam. The image is analyzed at a partial region i.e. contact surface, of the component using an evaluation device. The image points are associated to a three dimensional grid cell (14) during analyzing the image, and a surface portion (16) of the partial region is determined from the image points of the grid cell. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a partial region i.e. contact surface, of a component provided in the container.
