The system has a carriage provided with a carriage drive, and a carriage cable attached to the carriage. A hoist with a hoist drive is provided for receiving the carriage cable, and the carriage cable includes a strain gauge for detecting carriage cable curvature. The controller acts on the carriage drive and the hoist drive such that the carriage cable curvature does not exceed a predetermined threshold value. A light conductor is aligned along a longitudinal axis of the carriage cable, and the strain gauge detects transmission losses of light guided through the light conductor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a carriage.
