The device has a display system for displaying a digital map (70) that exhibits an adaptable visual complexity. The visual complexity is adjusted based on a cognitive demand of a user (80). The visual complexity is varied based on two aspects such as a graphical representation of the digital map and a projection manner of the digital map. The graphical representation of the digital map is based on graphic variables such as surface, line, point, texture, color, size, form, adjustment and position. The projection manner of the digital map is varied by three parameters. An independent claim is also included for a method for route guidance of a motor vehicle.
