The safety valve (1) has a valve housing (2), which has a valve housing inlet (10) and a valve housing outlet (11) for a fluid, particularly hydrogen, flowing through the valve housing. A closure piston (9) is mounted in the valve housing between a closed and an open position. The closure piston is formed such that it is translocated in a closed position blocking a flow through the valve on the closing pressure reaching a defined closing pressure which acts on the closure piston. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a valve assembly.
