The device has current monitoring devices (15, 16) arranged in a current circuit that is formed between an electrical load (12) and a voltage source (10). A safety switching device (23) is provided for repeated opening of semiconductor switches (17, 18) during operation of the load at insignificantly impairing short time intervals. A detector mechanism detects current interruptions during short time intervals, and is connected with the current monitoring devices. A signaling unit and a reporting unit are provided for signaling missing current interruptions. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring switching capability of semiconductor switches that are utilized for switching an electrical load.
