The system (30) has a base (32) movable along a guiding device (38). A pivoting arm (34) is supported at a bearing point (50) of the base and at a bearing point (52) of a retaining platform (36) that is movable between a lower position and an upper position in a lifting movement. The bearing point (52) of the retaining platform is positioned at an entire breadth of the bearing point (50) of the base concerning to a vertical direction (48) during the lifting movement. The base comprises a passage area for moving the retaining platform during the lifting movement. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lifting system of a motor vehicle.
