Particles of metal and/or non-metallic compound (I), is claimed, where: the particles contain other compounds and properties than the known thermodynamically stable compounds in the particular material system; the crystallinity can vary depending on the nature of the involved precursor; the morphology can vary depending on the type and amount of the involved cations; and the particles have a reactive surface and the reactivity is caused by silicon/chlorine bonds. Particles of metal and/or non-metallic compound of formula ((lithium) a(aluminum) b(silicon) c(M) d(oxygen) e(chlorine) f) (I), is claimed, where: the particles contain other compounds and properties than the known thermodynamically stable compounds in the particular material system; the crystallinity can vary depending on the nature of the involved precursor; the morphology can vary depending on the type and amount of the involved cations; and the particles have a reactive surface and the reactivity is caused by silicon/chlorine bonds. M : titanium, niobium or antimony; and a-f : not defined. An independent claim is included for producing particles comprising reacting a mixture consisting of a steam suitable precursor compound, preferably metal- and/or semi-metal -chlorides, with oxygen or oxygen-containing compound under conditions, which allow the reaction of the gas mixture supplied as ready to form the particles.
