The system (50) has an engine start detector for detecting whether an internal combustion engine (ICE) (16) e.g. 4-stroke ICE, of a hybrid powertrain system (10) is activated through an electric motor (EM) (18) during an auto start operation. An EM speed monitor determines two different speeds of the EM at different time periods after detecting that the ICE is in an active state. A main control module (51) determines a rate of change in speed of the EM based on the speeds. The module adjusts a torque output of the EM during startup of the ICE and based on the rate of change in the EM speed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a hybrid powertrain system comprising an internal combustion engine (2) a method for operating a hybrid powertrain control system.
