Ceramic based composite material for manufacture of austempered ductile iron or steel industrial cutting tools is made from a powder mixture of Si(3N(4, Al(2O(3, AlN and ZrO(2. The powder mixture also contains one or more of the elements Mg, Ca, Y, Lu, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and/or Yb.
